Vinh Ha Long
Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a popular travel destination, located in Quang Ninh province, Vietnam. Administratively, the bay belongs to Hạ Long City, Cẩm Phả town, and part of Van Don district
Hạ Long (About this sound listen) also known as Hong Gai, Hon Gai and Hongay, is the capital city of Quang Ninh province, Vietnam. The city mainly lies on Bai Tu Long Bay, which is part of the Hạ Long Bay. It is located at about 160 km northeast of Hanoi. The population in 2010 was 221,580
The city's economy has recently switched from coal mining to tourism, due to the large amount of visitors drawn by the famous Hạ Long Islets every year. At present, Hạ Long is experiencing rapid growth not only in tourism sphere, but as a place upon the main road to southern China. In 2007 Vietnam-China Business Forum, a $400 million deal was signed to build a highway linking Hạ Long, Mong Cai and Quảng Ninh.
Hạ Long city is divided into two parts: East Hạ Long and West Hạ Long. The eastern part ("Hon Gai"), where most of the official buildings and industry are concentrated, is connected by bridge with the western part ("Bai Chay"), considered to be more of a tourism attraction.
There are several good quality hotels in Hạ Long city and plenty of budget accommodation, two hospitals and several private medical centers.
In the south of the city there is Bai Tho (‘Poem’) Mountain with its almost vertical seaward face, which was widely used by some famous local poets. The limestone peak is rich in bio-diversity and offers attractive views of the bay. There are also such places of interest as Cua Van Fishing Village, Hoang Gia Park, Hạ Long Market, Bai Chay Trading Center, Quảng Ninh Museum, Vietnam-Japan Cultural House, Children's Cultural House.
Hạ Long city has an active Roman Catholic Church in its eastern part ("Hon Gai") on the hill near the main post office, which holds the services on Sunday evenings and on Christian holidays.
The biggest hotel in Vietnam is planned to be built on the bay, beginning from 2007

VNAT holds meeting with Air Asia
(TITC)- On March 15, in Ha Noi, Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism received representatives of the international carrier of Air Asia. Attending the meeting were Deputy General Director of VNAT Nguyen Manh Cuong, leaders of Tourism Marketing and International Cooperation departments.
Air Asia’s Indochina Marketing Manager, Ms. Suthatta Thanissara Saksucharita informed that the airline has operated flights from Da Nang, Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City to Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and vice versa. Coming to Viet Nam this time, the delegation hoped to study more about information of Viet Nam’s destinations in order to promote Viet Nam tourism and consider the possibility of expanding air routes to other destinations of Viet Nam.
Leader of Tourism Marketing Department, Mr. Le Tuan Anh introduced some well known destinations as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Da Lat (Lam Dong), Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), Phu Quoc (Kien Giang)…, which have tourism potentials and international airports. He also informed some remarkable tourism events in 2013 including Viet Nam International Travel Mart in Ha Noi – VITM (from 18th to 21st April); International Sea Travel Mart in Nha Trang – ISTM (from 6th to 8th June); International Travel Exhibition in HCM City – ITE (from 12th to 14th September); Red River Delta Tourism Fair in Hai Phong (scheduled in October or November 2013). These national and international events would be a chance for participants to survey market, and exchange business opportunities.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy General Director Nguyen Manh Cuong highly valued the visit of Air Asia and said it is an opportunity for tourism cooperation between the two sides. He also confirmed that VNAT will provide tourism information and coordinate to organize famtrip, presstrip for tourism promoting and expanding Air Asia’s route network.
Air Asia is one of leading airlines in Asia. With a route network that spans through to over 20 countries, AirAsia continues to pave the way for low-cost aviation.

Con Dao Prison becomes special national relic
Con Dao Prison, where some 20,000 Vietnamese revolutionaries died during the war against the French colonialists and American invaders, has become a special national relic.
On March 23, a certificate honouring the prison its new title was handed over to the authorities of southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province (where Con Dao prison is located), in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan.
Deputy PM Nhan said the title demonstrates the nation’s deep gratitude to 20,000 martyrs and heroes, who laid down their lives for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland and for the Communist Party of Vietnam’s ideals, making Con Dao the most sacred land in the country.
The title is also a confirmation of the historical relic’s great value, contributing to educating younger generations on the nation’s heroic history, Nhan added.
A decision to build Con Dao prison was issued in 1862. It encompassed eight prison blocks, each covering 10,000-25,000 square metres, and dozens of auxiliary cells, capable of detaining tens of thousands of prisoners.
Con Dao prison witnessed Vietnamese revolutionaries with staunch spirit endure the brutal torture of French colonialists, and later American imperialists, from 1930 to 1975. It was estimated that one prisoner died every day. Vietnam’s outstanding leaders, including late President Ton Duc Thang, late Party General Secretary Le Duan, and late Party General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh were once held in the prison.

Vi-Dam folk music was officially selected as a representative of Vietnamese heritage seeking UNESCO’s recognition as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014.
The announcement was made by the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on March 23.
According to the department, a dossier requesting the recognition is being finalised to be submitted to UNESCO before the March 31 deadline.
Vi-Dam singing is popular in nearly 260 villages in the central provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh.
The two provinces have 51 singing clubs with over 800 vocalists, many of whom are actively preserving the folk music.
Vi-Dam folk music, estimated to have 15 tunes of Vi and 8 airs of Dam, is a repartee sung while working. It reflects the work, cultural lives and feelings of the residents in the central coastal provinces.
Vietnam now has seven examples of intangible heritage recognised by UNESCO as world intangible heritages, namely Nha Nhac – the Vietnamese Court Music, The space of gong culture in Central Highlands, Quan ho Bac Ninh folk songs, Giong Festival at Phu Dong and Soc temples (Ha Noi), Ca Tru singing, Xoan singing in Phu Tho Province and Worship of Hung Kings in Phu Tho province

Vietnam attends “World Culture Day” in France
Vietnamese history and people have become the theme of a workshop held within the framework of the “World Culture Day” in Gretz-Armainvilliers city, France, on March 23 and 24.
The workshop saw the attendance of the city’s Mayor Jean-Paul Garcia and Deputy Mayor Christian Bourdeille, Vietnamese Ambassador to France Duong Chi Dung, among others.
The first workshop on Vietnam in Gretz-Armainvilliers was chaired by historian Alain Ruscio, who is a close friend of Vietnamese people and a researcher of Vietnamese history, culture and civilisation.
Ruscio gave a presentation on distinctive cultural features in various regions in Vietnam, important landmarks in the country’s history and Vietnam-France traditional cooperation.
Ambassador Dung said the workshop was a highlight among activities organised by the city to celebrate 40 years of the two countries’ diplomatic ties.
Before the event, Dung planted a commemorative tree and launched activities in respond to the “World Culture Day”.
